Bachelor of Arts in Christian Counseling

CIC 504- Introduction to Christian counseling

Christian Counseling is the systematic application of Biblical principles a counselor uses to approach dealing with circumstances, relationships, and situations of life from a Biblical perspective. Christian Counseling distinguishes itself from other schools of counseling by acknowledging that the Scriptures give us everything necessary to help us understand our mental processes, our actions and reactions to life, our emotional needs, our attitudes, values, and beliefs.

CCW 503- Counseling According to the word

People need counseling because they have not been able to meet their needs in a Biblically correct manner. The meeting of these needs begins with a realistic and right relationship with God and can be summed up by fulfilling the following: Love God and Love Your Neighbor. The Bible provides extensive and practical instruction on how to obey these two commands. In the absence of a pathology, “mental Illness” is the feeling and state one is in, when his thought and behaviors bring him into conflict with God’s laws.

PM 302 - Pastoral Counseling

There is likely no stickier area of pastoral ministry than counseling. Traps abound. Mistakes will be made. The counseling pastor is in great demand today. How can a devoted pastor combine Biblical teaching with the counseling touch? Archibald D. Hart, Gary L. Gulbranson, and Jim Smith combine decades of experience in pastoral counseling to give the student a wealth of godly wisdom. “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever…” (Psalm 33:11)

CC 112—Winning Over Worry

The need to help people cope with the problem of worry cries out for a spiritual solution! Uncontrolled worry corrodes the joy of living and brings about deterioration of mind and body. The world tries to solve these problems with temporary, partial quick fixes (often resorting to medication that may even lead to substance abuse). Any non-biblical approach will ultimately just give the worrier more to worry about. People are desperate for a total solution, and that can only be found through God’s peace principles as revealed in His Word. This course uses a classic bestseller by John E. Haggai and a small booklet by Charles Weigle to equip the counselor to point others to worry-free living.

The material is practical, realistic, and useful. The text is authored by William J. Rowley. What better blessing is there than pouring Biblical truth into the life of a teenager?

Master of Arts in Counseling

CC 401—Competence in Counseling

The Holy Spirit is the one who brings about change in the personality and behavior of the counselee. Learn of the nouthetic counseling approach as taught by Dr. Jay Adams. Christian counseling is dramatically different from secular counseling or psychiatry.

CC 512—Counseling from the Scripture

The Christian church stands in peril from the impact of psychotherapy. This pseudoscience devised by non-Christian minds such as Freud has deceived the world and many within the church. This course is a clarion call to God’s people to turn from humanistic methods of curing men’s souls back to the Great Physician Himself. Based on the research of the Bobgans, this course offers a wealth of Scriptural resources for helping hurting people with God’s Word. Practical foundational principles are emphasized throughout this study.

CNC 811—Advanced Nouthetic Counseling

Some people seem so masterful, how do they do that? Why did Jesus’ weep? Where do emotions come from? How can I express it? By John Edmiston

CCP502- Christian and Psychology

The word itself means the study of the soul. Minirth and Meier give a broader definition in their Introduction to Psychology and Counseling, ‘Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of organism. Basically, psychologists try to find out what makes people tick and how their minds work. Psychology might be thought of as the study of how living creatures are able to interact with their environment and each other, and how they cope successfully or unsuccessfully with that environment’ (p. 15). In other words, psychology is the study of how people live, why they do what they do and what can be done to help them live better. These subjects, by the way, are addressed rather directly by the Scriptures; yet Christian psychologists minimize this truth.

CC 611—Counseling the Depressed

Depression is likened to a stubborn darkness. Edward T. Welch, M.Div., Ph.D., uses God’s Word to give light for the path to the depressed and those who counsel them. Depression and Bi-polar Disorder are two of the most common diagnoses given by psychiatrists today. Powerful drugs are prescribed for treatment. Is it possible that God has a divine prescription for treatment? Teaching by Charles Spurgeon is paired with Edward T. Welch’s research to help show how to receive joy that will remain despite—the struggles and trials of daily living.

CC 615—Family Counseling Resources

Family counselors need a complete toolbox these days. The “home” didn’t just spring up yesterday. It is the oldest institution known to man. It existed even before the church was established! A divine prescription is written in the Bible covering every phase, aspect and facet of family relationships. If we would build our lives, our homes and our marriages by the biblical prescription, we would have happy homes. Study and learn the timeless principles to a good marriage, excellent parenting, and how to counsel “broken” families—God’s way.

CC 811—Advanced Nouthetic Counseling

Based on the research of Jay Adams, this course takes a nouthetic (Christ-centered) approach to Christian counseling. Includes help for the actual counseling procedure. Special topics include dealing with anger, envy, depression, schizophrenia, sexual problems, and fear.

Victory is found only in Jesus! Amen? D.L. Moody shares many true-life stories of overcomers that came to experience a joy-filled life that God has made available to all Christians.

Master of Arts in Theology

PM 221 -Sermon Preparation

Preaching is the proclamation of the Good News of salvation, the very truth of God through man to men. The preacher is separated by God for the specific work of preaching the Gospel. Take this close examination of expository preaching with emphasis on the preparation, process, and organization needed to prepare effective sermons.

NT 316-Colossians

OT 207—Book of Esther

God’s hand of providence and protection on behalf of His people is evident throughout the Book of Esther, though His name does not appear even once. In this study, J. Vernon McGee helps us understand some of the riches and valuable lessons from this great story.

OT 203—Book of Ruth

J. Vernon McGee leads this study on the Romance of Redemption. Is there any more memorable statement of faith than Ruth’s “..thy people shall be my people, and thy God shall be my God.”? This woman of faith lost her husband and came out of the idolatrous land of Moab only to be remarried to Boaz. We have much to learn from this ancestor in the line of Jesus our Lord. Redemption is only possible through a Kinsman-Redeemer. The student will gain a fuller appreciation of our Redeemer—Jesus.

NT 131- Gospel of Mark

J. Vernon McGee is quoted as saying, “There is probably more content in the first chapter of Mark than any other chapter in the Bible.” Mark reveals that in spite of Jesus’ busy life, He took time to pray. This verse by verse, chapter by chapter exploration spans Mark’s recounting of the prophecies of Isaiah and Malachi through John the Baptist ending with the Resurrection of Jesus. Have you studied this, Gospel?

Vernon McGee discuss how Christ is preeminent in all things and how we can see Him as our life, our mind, our goal and our strength. Philippians deals with the philosophy, pattern, prize, and power for Christian living. The Christian will benefit tremendously from this study.

TH 801 —Pneumatology: The doctrine of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit seals all believers as a pledge of our redemption. He supernaturally transforms human nature. He enables Christians to bring about dramatic but peaceful revolution and to face any crisis. He empowers us for God’s work. Unfortunately, teaching on the Holy Spirit has often been distorted at one extreme and discounted on the other end of the extreme. Dr. Billy Graham (considered by many to be the most influential evangelist of the past century) gives a balanced and Biblical teaching of Pneumatology without “watering it down.

CE 311 - Directing Christian Education

We eventually found the colored chalk in the supply room and even came up with some great craft ideas for first and second graders. And, as I later discovered, teachers did appreciate the larger perspective I gave —7— to their teaching. And that is what teaching is about: attending to details and giving people a greater perspective. That’s exactly what our three authors do for us here. They discuss the trouble spots of teaching while enlarging our vision of the teaching task. In that way, they help us as we move, with them, on our way toward mastering teaching.

CBC 603- Building your Church through counseling

One of the best definitions of a leader is “someone who is willing to take responsibility for someone else.” Lots of people want to absolve themselves of responsibility for anyone but themselves (and some try to dodge even that). But Christians who’ve heard the call of God know that ministry is about caring for others. “Care” isn’t just an emotion, a warm feeling toward people in general, or an affection for a few individuals. No, care implies making sure that basic needs are met. Pastoral care means taking responsibility for the spiritual wellbeing of a group. The “pastoral epistles” are filled with the apostle Paul’s instructions about caring for the flock—details of organization and administration are part of it, but the emphasis is on sound counsel (through personal conversation and through teaching and preaching) and effective care. The purpose: cultivating mature Christian character.

CCR 604-Counseling Recipes

The Bible is not only a revelation of God. It is a revelation of human nature. With the exception of humor, it contains more complete pictures of men and women, of good and evil, then any other work. The Mosaic account of the creation of Eve may not be confirmed by scientific research. But the Book of Proverbs is as true today as when it was first written. Like Church Growth, Counselling is another hot topic of the day. Degrees are awarded by more and more seminaries on this subject to more and more students of psychology and psychotherapy. For as modern-day stress and strain has caused more and more to break down mentally and emotionally, so must be trained a new generation of counsellors by the study of psychology and psychotherapy. But which textbook is most reliable for our study of theology (which totally involves the study of man)? Dr William Lyons Phelps, introducing The Bible for Today edited by John Stirling,

CPP607-Parent on Purpose Counseling

Parenting On Purpose will lay a foundation that can provide for better and more informed choices. However, ultimately, children will eventually exercise their God given right to choose. Now a look at the foundations. Children do change our lives. They change our lives dramatically because of the very nature that children have, which is one of total dependence upon us to care for them. Most of us know, from a serious viewpoint, that it is a great privilege to have children and a privilege to raise them. It is a wonderful thing to see your children succeed, grow and hopefully become better than what you ever dreamed you could become. Most parents I talk with have great dreams and hopes for their children. Unfortunately, children have their own agenda, and at times can stray in unpleasant even dangerous directions.

CFV 608-Counseling and Family Violence

This manuscript is written for those preparing themselves for effective service in ministry or for personal growth and understanding. This material is meant to be used with the companion study guide. The focus is to first present the various facts and figures, and to lay out a plan for intervention with families caught in the web of violence. Secondly, in the section on victims and victimizers, the dynamics of abuse in various areas is fully detailed. Finally, the section on treatment and recovery details the process of change that most people, perpetrators and victims, can successfully experience with God’s power and good clinical wisdom. It is my hope that the reader will grow as he/she processes through the material.

CAB609-Child Abuse and the Coping Strategies

In this book Child Abuse and the Coping Strategies: The Spiritual Implication. It is a book for all ages. Dr. Gordon shares how the Lord can restore to individuals those years that the enemy has stolen during child abuse, brokenness, low self-esteem, shame, and emotional pain that crush their confidence now and years after. There is hope and restoration as you give your life to Jesus, he will indeed restore you! He shares information that will utterly astound you. Oftentimes, the enemy comes in such a subtle way and steals your dignity, leaving you hopeless, and gasping for life. But, trusting in God, he can bring every hurting and broken person back to wholesomeness. However, there are many years of one’s life that have been stolen, and the way one was held captive by the enemy is not the way one would have thought it would happen to anyone. Nevertheless, the amazing God will always expose what was such a deceptive power into the light of truth. Dr. Gordon speaks powerfully how Jesus can set free those individuals who are suffering from emotional and psychological pain of child abuse and in whatever other areas they are bound and are devastated. Their hopelessness can turn into victory! The apostle Paul wrote in Roman. 8:37: “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that love us.”

CE 481 -Christian Teacher: by Clarence H. Benson, Litt. D

WHAT is a teacher? A teacher is one who helps somebody else to learn. In other words, the teacher cooperates with the pupil in learning. He does not seek to perform before an audience made up of listening pupils but undertakes with them an activity in which they are busily engaged. There is no teaching unless there is learning. The teacher has not really taught unless the pupil has learned. The object of our teaching is to make something happen in the life of our pupils. The test of our teaching is what happens in the life of our pupil.

NT 611—The Book of Revelation

Book of Revelation. Everyone is interested in what is going to happen to them and their loved ones after death and what the future holds for this planet. It explains such topics as the rapture of the church, the great tribulation, the final battle against Satan and his hosts, the new heaven and new earth, and much more.

OT 101-105-Old Testament Survey

Old Testament Survey I -V. These five courses survey the content, history and customs of the Old Testament. Many Christians wrongly believe that the Old Testament contains nothing relevant for today. It is almost treated as a separate document that is ignored or treated as a dead history. In truth, the Old Testament points to Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said that He came not to abolish the OT but to fulfill it. Bible students must know the OT to fully understand the New Testament.

NT 101 -New Testament Survey

In the years that preceded the coming of Christ, God had been active in the lives of men and in the affairs of the nations. Many had a part in this pre-Christian era. Among the three most important contributors were the Hebrews and their religion, the Greeks and their language, and the Romans and their social and political organization. To the Jew, the Old Testament was the book of God. God was One, the Law was the revelation of His will, and life was under His jurisdiction. There was an air of expectancy that God would intervene and save His people (Luke 2:25).
