  2. Name three characteristics of Christian Counseling.

    Three characteristics of Christian counseling are it focuses on the truth, it is based on solid Bible study, and the establishment or restoration of man’s right relationship with God.
  3. Give one of the goals of Christian Counseling. Christian counseling helps the counselee identify and deal with root causes not just surface problems.
  4. Describe the difference between a law and a commandment. Laws are formal decrees or judicial verdicts where commandments are charges or obligations.
  5. Effective counseling is Jesus centered, scriptural, discerning, deals with the whole person, it is progressive, and prayer centered.
  6. Give four scriptures to support counseling. Four scriptures that support counseling are Judges 18:5, Psalm 119:9, 2 Peter 1:2-3, and Psalm 1:1.
  7. We see from this partial list of words that the concept of counseling goes far beyond just the general notion of “therapy”.
  8. 8. Define the word comfort in the Greek, as used in I Thes. 5: 14. Comfort is derived from two words. Para and muthos; meaning to relate near and by implication to encourage or console.
  9. 9. Name the six types of counseling and give one problem and one technique for each. The six types of counseling are Confronting with unnecessary conflict as a problem and confronting with Biblical reality as a technique. The second is Exhorting. Low self esteem is one of the problems, however, listening and encouraging are its technique. Thirdly, Teaching through premarital and marital counseling and providing the opportunity for discussion. Warning is the fourth type. One of its problems is how spiritual decisions are made with making the client aware of potential dangers they may be overlooking is one technique. The fifth type of counseling is Spiritual. Its problem is the lack of understanding of meaning, purpose and calling. Open discussion and exploration without criticism are its technique. Lastly Referral /Short Term is the sixth form of counseling. Its problem is severe loss; its technique is to be honest of your own abilities.
  10. Of the two groups of people needing counseling, which group, according to the secular world, needs counseling, and which group needs psychotherapy? Of the two groups of people needing counseling the neurotic group needs counseling. The psychotic group needs psychotherapy.
  11. In the 6 areas of analysis, describe the characteristics of a person needing psychotherapy in the area of relationships. Social contacts not having normal boundaries describe the characteristics of a person needing psychotherapy in relationships.
  12. In order for one to choose the direction counseling must take, there must be a standard.
  13. Of the 15 areas of life listed on page 20, how many of the statements agree with God’s Word? None of the 15 listed areas agree with God’s word.
  14. Give the name of the Lord that means The Lord our Peace. Jehovah Shalom is the name for The Lord Our Peace.
  15. What is the root of God’s authority? The root of God’s authority is that he is Creator with the legal right to rule over his creation. He has the absolute right to set Laws, His Testimonies, Ways, Precepts, Statutes and Commandments.
  16. What separated man from God? Give the Bible verse to back up your answer. Man’s sin separated him from God. This is stated in Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that at all have sinned.”
  17. Give a scripture reference to back up the Bible truth that man’s focus became carnal and self-directed after the fall. Man’s focus became carnal and self-directed is referenced in Genesis 3:7.
  18. What does the inherent need of significance refer to? The inherent need of significance refers to the fact that man has need of both internal and external value.
  19. . List the 6 basic needs of man. The six basic needs of man are: love, significance, freedom, discipline, emotional awareness and knowledge of God.
  20. All of man’s behavior is the attempt to satisfy these God given, innate needs.
  21. What response is evoked by the unmet need of love? Distress is evoked by the unmet need of love.
  22. Name the human need that is resolved by the Biblical solution: Obey God. The human need that is resolved by the biblical solution of obeying God is freedom.
  23. Give two scripture references that show we are to meet one another’s needs. Two scripture references that show we are to meet one another’s needs are Galatians 5:13 and Ephesians 4:32.
  24. Give two scripture references that show the importance of love. Hebrews 10:24-25 and 1Peter 1:22 are scriptural references that show the importance of love.
  25. If we are to love God, our neighbors, our enemies, and our spouses, then who are we allowed to hate? We are allowed to hate no one.
  26. In the scriptures, the heart is the center of the emotional part of man’s personality.
  27. Give three scripture references to back up the statement in question 26. Scripture references that substantiate the heart being the emotional part of man’s personality are Proverbs 4:23, Genesis 17:17, and Numbers 32:9.
  28. Define the Spirit. The Spirit is the home of conscience, love, faith and enthusiasm.

  34. What are the four components that compose human behavior? The four components composing human behavior are thought, emotions, behavior, and psychological response.
  35. Emotions are produced by one’s knowledge and perception of an event.
  36. In the chart on page 42, list the progression of behavior produced by an Event. The progression of behavior is Event – Thought – Emotion – Respond.
  37. So, if one changes the thought, then everything else changes.

Analyzing is a defense mechanism us to explain cause or failure in an attempt to resolve an issue. Blaming is placing judgement on someone else. Rationalization is an attempt to prove one’s behavior as rational or justifiable.
