Biblical Basis of Missions
CHAPTER I
THE MiSSiOnARy CHARACTER OF THE SCRipTURES
Bible Study is the foundation and a very important stepping stone for missionaries. Spiritual refreshment comes as we study the word of God together and share what Jesus Christ has done in each of our lives. This will give us the encouragement we need to go back into our world on a daily basis to reach the lost for Christ.

CHAPTER 2
THE CHURCH AND MISSIONS
World-Evangelization the Church’s Supreme Aim and Task
Qumran
About the time the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1948 a nearby ruin was excavated. This ruin was Qumran, and know now that its inhabitants were devout Jews who copied, used, and finally hid what we call the Dead Sea Scrolls.
They apparently left their fellow men so that they could worship, study and practice their faith. They were probably strict followers of the Jewish law. They lived by farming, and they must have held their property in common.
From the time of its founding about 100 B.C., this isolated community on the shores of the Dead Sea spent its time building up the kind of society that it believed to be desirable from all men.
Qumran lasted only until A.D. 70. It was never rebuilt, as were other ancient cities. Its very existence was unknown to civilized men until recent years. In that sense we may think of Qumran as an event; an attempt by men of
intense faith to establish a model community.
The people at Qumran pulled out of society to begin a sort of “new world.” A place where there is no bomb, where men are not judged by their color of skin, and where money is not the most important value.
We have no way of knowing whether they were more virtuous than other men. They tried to obey the Jewish law, we know that. They prayed, worked, and lived together for several generations.
Their idea though, continues to nag the church. What if could shake off the cares of the world? Could we then be true Christians? Could we then reach the lost by hiding our heads in the sand?
I Think Not!
To obey God is to serve other men. We are not called to hide from them. God expects us to get people to love, support, and strengthen each other.
Jesus not only talked about this kind of service, but he put it all into practice. That is why we can call him the “suffering servant.”
Be a true disciple, a servant of men. He put it all into practice and today our commission is to do likewise. Go! Preach! and Make disciples!

CHAPTER 3
THE PASTOR AND MISSIONS
The Home Pastor’s Strategic Place in World Evangelization
Christ has said, “Go”, and if a man is called to minister he understands the implications of such a mandate. If a church is to call itself Christian it too has no alternative—it must be a missionary. A church with a missionary-minded
man as Pastor will fully commit his church and resources in the intention of Jesus for the world. The Pastor of a local church knows that he is no less a missionary because he can not be on the mission field. He, from his pulpit,
is the man with the key. He and those in the congregation are making the difference for the man in the field.
Words alone are not adequate to tell the story of the need and opportunity, difficulty and progress on a mission field. From time to time it should be visualized. This can be done by having a missionary tell his or her story
in the first person. This can also be accomplished by pictures, reports, films, etc. The idea is to sell the idea.
The missionary need not be alone in his task to reach the world. He is part of the Church. The church then is responsible to respond to the Great Commission.
- The primary work of the church is to Jesus Christ .and and , throughout the world.

CHAPTER 4
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND MISSIONS
The Divine Enduement and Leadership in Missions
TRUE—FALSE
4.1 In the Great Commission some reference to the Holy Spirit is made.4.2 “Go ye” and “Tarry ye” are contradictory the one to the other.
4.3 The beginning of the Early church was designated as “the day of Pentecost”.
4.4 That “day of Pentecost” was the birth day of the Christian Church.
4.5 The Spirit was not necessary as the divine spark to kindle the flame that was to produce God’s power.
4.6 Christian missions could not begin until the descent of the Spirit at Pentecost.
4.7 The Dark Ages were a time when the Pentecostal missionary fire burned so low upon the altar as to be almost extinguished.
4.8 Receiving the enduement of the Holy Spirit transcends all intellectual and other qualifications and preparation for effective missionary service.
4.9 The Great Commission was not given in connection with Pentecost, and its fulfillment was made entirely dependent on it.
4.10 The Pentecostal commission can only be carried out by a Pentecostal Church, in Pentecostal power.
4.11 The Holy Spirit was the personal leader of the apostolic missions.
4.12 The preacher is the all important one in converting and convicting the sinner.
4.13 Peter overlooked the point that the Holy Spirit was the active leader of the Church.
4.14 The Holy Spirit presides over deliberative councils.
4.15 Today there lurks a subtle peril of substituting human mechanics for divine dynamics
4.16 A returning to New Testament principles and standards is the secret of true blessing and success in missions

The Apostle to the Gentiles
Paul, as a Hebrew of the Hebrews, had a passion to win his own kinsmen for Christ, but they rejected his witness, and so the break came when he said to Barnabas, his co-missionary, “Lo, we turn to the Gentiles.” And out he went
to gather multitudes of non-Jews for the Savior who died for Jew and Gentile alike. What a vast circuit he covered, and what an example to all soul winners he is of self-denial and Christian devotion!
The influence of Paul”s three great missionary expeditions upon the history of mankind cannot be over-estimated. The time covered in these tours was about ten years, and the distance covered about 8,100 miles—insignificant
in these days as jet planes unite continents, but remarkable in those days when they had no planes, cars, trains, or fast-going ships. The apostle continued labouring thus for some thirty years, till, as is generally believed,
he was beheaded by order of Nero at Rome, about A.D. 66. The world’s greatest missionary was at home over all the then known Roman world.
Paul, like the God he served, had no respect of persons. All kinds of men had a claim upon his time and talents, and as a debtor to all, he faithfully discharged his obligation.
At his conversion, Paul was warned of the many things he would have to suffer for Christ’s sake and as he came to suffer he never sighed or moaned but he gloried in his tribulations and was prouder of his scars in battle than
a soldier of his medals and decorations. What a warrior-missionary he was! The world has never seen his like.

CHAPTER 9
PRAYER AND MISSIONS
The Vital Place of Missionary Intercession
Missionaries need human support and encouragement. They also need divine support. That is why it is so important to pray and not forget.
You may find that it strengthens your faith and foster good prayer habits when you pray with a group of people who will share your concern for the missionary work around the world. Our prayer commitments often suffer neglect
and as we shake the missionary’s hand after the slide show, we say, “I’ll certainly will be praying for you.” But we don’t. Many missionaries have been hurt by these promises that some have decided never again to speak to U.S.
churches and missions groups. They, instead, itinerate in Canada. Perhaps the people who said they would pray actually did. But he probably never heard from them, never received any feedback on his prayer letters, and may never
have felt encouraged by their prayer partners.
We call missionaries “servants”, “saints,” “spiritual giants.” They may be any and all of these. But they’re also people-like us, but a different setting. Don’t forget them!
We, as senders and partners in mission, have also been called with all missionaries to fulfill the Great Commission. Where would God’s mission be today were it not for the prayers of his children in the many churches around
this country of ours.
- Prayer is the and mightiest factor of all. Praying is an acceptable substitute for going in the case of those who are and able to go.
- But we will give continually to , and to the ministry of the .

- In all these multitudes of India, China, Japan, Africa, and the Islands of the Sea we find the same phenomenon- .
- What do we get when we rely on prayer?
TRUE—FALSE
9.11 Praying without preaching can never carry out the missionary task.9.12 Paul continually appealed to the churches for prayer.
9.13Prayer is mentioned thirty (30) times in the Bible.
9.14 Jesus could not live without regular communion with His Father.
9.15.The greatest missionaries have been uniformly men of prayer.
9.16 Since the universe is governed by certain fixed and unalterable laws, no man by his praying should be able to interfere with such fixed laws.
9.17 True missionary intercession is no easy thing, but strenuous labor.
9.18 Count Zinzendorf is universally recognized as “The Father of Modern Missions.”
9.19 The prayer power has never been tried to its full capacity in any church.
9.20. What do we get when we rely upon prayer? We get what man can do.

THE“LITTLE LAD” * AND MISSIONS
The Feeding of the Multitude—a Missionary Parable
At this point in our study of missions it is only fair to warn you that, we which sometimes support and send out the missionaries become the sent. God may call you not only to support or help but to become involved in such a way that the mission field may become your field. We do, however want to remember that the senders call is not an inferior one. Both the sender and the sent have become one in God’s Work and Purpose. Ask yourself this question: “Which wing of the airplane is more important-the left or the right? I believe it needs both. The plane would be grounded without the use of both. God’s mission would likewise be grounded if the missionary was not supported by those who can help but cannot go. Let me ask you a question, “Are you as an individual fulfilling “Your Responsibility” as a faithful servant of God?”
- Why is the feeding of the multitude a mission parable? Jesus had in His the larger of and the world over for the of .
