Wanted: Fighting Christians
“Fight the good fight of faith.” I Timothy 6:12
“Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” II Timothy 2:3
The Christian life is a warfare, not a picnic. There are battles to be fought, enemies to be conquered, victories to be won. Of course, there are wonderful feasts to be enjoyed all along the way; but fighting, not feasting, is our special business.
I. Who Are Our Enemies?
- The devil. Ephesians 6:11-12.
- The world. I John 5:4. The world seeks to bring us under the dominion of its ideas, etc. It is our business to fight the world, to resist its attempt to bring us into bondage to itself.
- The flesh, our own flesh.
- Sin. Sin will attack us. We should fight back, and not yield or be overcome by it.
- False doctrine. Some think false doctrine is not worth fighting against. It is more worth fighting against than political tyranny in its worst forms. True doctrine is salvation and life. False doctrine brings damnation and death.
II. How Should We Fight?
- We must fight to win. No Christian has a right to expect defeat or to be defeated.
- We must fight energetically.
- We must fight wisely. The way to get wisdom for our holy war is by prayer. James 1:5. Much of our fighting must be done on our knees.
- We must fight persistently. This warfare is not to stop until Jesus comes or God calls us home. The trouble with many a Christian warrior is that he fights intermittently.
III. Conditions of Victory.
- Faith in Jesus Christ. I John 5:4-5.
- We must be strong. Ephesians 6:10, 3:16; I John 2:14.
- We must be ready to suffer hardship. II Timothy 2:3.
- A knowledge of weapons. The great weapon of our warfare is the Word of God. We must have the weapons—and use them!—Dr. R.A. Torrey

Pastors are under attack! Pray that your pastor may “resist the devil” and make Satan flee!
Resist the Devil
The Bible exhorts us to fight. James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” The word “resist” literally means “fight back.”
The police officer goes to arrest a man, and the man resists arrest. What does that mean? It means he is doing everything in his power to keep the policeman from arresting him. He is fighting back.
When Satan attacks, the average Christian prays. Now there is nothing wrong with praying, but the promise is not, “Pray, and I will make the Devil flee from you.” The promise is, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Many Christians don’t know what it is to have the Devil flee, because they have never resisted him.
The Devil is too powerful for us, but he is not too powerful for the indwelling presence of Christ. We must say, “In the name of Jesus, get thee hence,” or “Depart.”
If you knock on my door at night and say, “Let me in,” I might not let you in. But if someone knocks on my door, shows me a policeman’s badge and says, “In the name of the law, let me in,” I don’t have much choice. And when we say, “In the name of Jesus,” the Devil doesn’t have a choice. When he hears that name, he trembles. He still remembers Calvary. He knows that he is a defeated foe and that on the cross Jesus Christ bruised his head.
If we resist the Devil by quoting an appropriate verse to combat the temptation and tell him to leave in the name of Jesus, he will depart. Oh, he may come back; and if he does, repeat the same process, even if he comes back five or six times the same day with the same temptation or the same doubt.
This may seem strange at first, but I assure you that it works: first, because the Bible says so; and second, because I have seen it work in my own life.
I once gave this Bible lesson on resisting the Devil to my congregation. The next week a dear lady came to me screaming, “It works! It works!”
“What works?” I asked.
“Resisting the Devil. It works!” Then she told the story of how she had been tempted and how she quoted an appropriate verse and commanded the Devil to leave in Jesus’ name. “And as soon as I did it, the temptation was gone.” The temptation was gone because the tempter had departed.
To be successful in resisting the Devil, you must be familiar with your weapon—the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Think of your worst temptation, the one you have the most often. Find an appropriate verse, and get ready to resist the Devil. Then find verses for every other temptation, and resist the Devil. He will flee from you.
The Word of God is not given to decorate coffee tables or bookshelves but to use. It is the Sword of the Spirit, and you are a soldier of Jesus Christ.
One final thought: the first part of James 4:7 says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” Before resisting the Devil, we should pray and get as close to God as we possibly can.—Curtis Hutson
