BACKGROUND IN COLOSSIANS

THE CITY: Colossae was a small town located about a hundred miles east of Ephesus. The nearest cities were Laodicea, about ten miles away, and Hierapolis, 13 miles away. Both of these neighboring cities had churches. Colossae, the smallest of the three in those days, was older than Laodicea or Hierapolis.

The fertile Lycus Valley where these three cities were located was heavily populated and was an area of great wealth in Paul’s day. It was the greatest center for the wool industry. Dyeing was also a big business there.

A generation earlier Colossae had been an extremely important city because of it’s location on the main trade route between Persia and Ephesus. but when the road system was changed, the population dwindled until it was considered an “insignificant market town.”

Colossae was devastated by a terrible earthquake only two or three years before Paul’s epistle was written. Many lives were lost and property damage was enormous.

300 years after Paul’s letter Colossae no longer existed as a city. Today, it’s site is only a place of ruins. The nearest town is the modern Honas.

THE CHURCH: We have no record of Paul ever actually visiting this city, but he was still the founder of a church there. This was possible through the ministry of Epaphras, a convert and representative of the apostle Paul. The church was probably established about 53-55 A.D. during Paul’s ministry at Ephesus. The church met in the home of Philemon. Although many Jews lived in Colossae, the membership of the church was mainly Gentile.

The Colossian church had problems. Dr. J. Vernon McGee discusses their situation this way:

Asia Minor was a great cultural center, but it was also a center for heathenism, paganism and the mystery religions. There was already abroad that which is known as Gnosticism: this was the first heresy of the church. There were many forms of Gnosticism, and the Colosse there were the Essenes. There are three points of identification for this group:

(1) They had an exclusive spirit. They were the aristocrats in wisdom. They felt that they were the people–they had knowledge in a jug and held the stopper in their hands. They felt they had the monopoly of it all. As a result, they considered themselves super-duper in knowledge and thought they knew more than any of the apostles. Paul will issue them a warning in the first chapter: “Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:28). Perfection is not to be found in any cult or any heresy, but in Christ Jesus. All wisdom is found in Him.

(2) They had speculative tenets in creation. They taught that God did not create the universe directly, but created a creature who in turn created another creature, until one finally created the physical universe. Christ was considered a creature in this long series of creations. This known in pantheistic Greek philosophy as the demiurge. Paul refutes this in Colossians 1:15-19 and 2:18.

(3) Another identifying mark of this group was their ethical practice of ascenticism and unrestrained licentiousness. They got the ascenticism from the influence of Greek Stoicism and the unrestrained licentiousness from the influence of Greek Epicureanism. Paul refutes this in colossains 2:16, 23 and 3:5-9.
